Train your dog to be socially acceptable

It is important to teach dogs not to jump and bark and accost other dogs and people when they approach. While some think it's cute for a puppy, many others do not and eventually that puppy will be a grown dog and it won't be cute anymore. Other dogs may be traumatized by one's aggressive behavior and if it is tolerated the aggressive dog will never learn that it is not acceptable.

One thing we can do is to train our dogs that they cannot approach other dogs or people without our permission. Work with your dog to sit/stay as others pass by (initially by using several small treats, one after another diverting his or her attention to you instead of those passing by). When you feel it is time for your dog to meet the other dog or person, use the same command every time (like “say hello”) and approach the others with a short leash. If either dog seems the least bit uncomfortable upon meeting, pull your dog away to avoid traumatizing either one. Just like humans, dogs don't like all other dogs or people and we should respect their space.

This is a great tip. I had a bad experience just this morning with a woman's dog growling and jumping at my greyhound. I wasn't necessarily mad, but I wished she had spent more time training her dog!

Nice post. The earlier you learn to train dog the better that your dog will understand, obey. When you interact with your dog, you are showing your dog something, so teaching the right manners is up to you.
