How to Stop Your Dog's Submissive Peeing Episodes
Typically, this frustrating behavior occurs upon greeting your furry friend. He may squat or roll over and dribble. Many people make the mistake of scolding the dog, which really only serves to reinforce this behavior.
To curtail submissive peeing, it is important to appear as non-threatening to your dog as possible. Here are some things to try:
- Keep greetings low key – do not encourage excitement.
- When you first enter the room, ignore your dog. Let him come to you.
- Do NOT make eye contact.
- Pet him under the chin gently, not on top of the head. But do not reach for the dog – let him come to you.
- Do NOT scold or otherwise punish the dog for submissive peeing.
- It may also help to distract your dog from this behavior by commanding him to sit or stay or do something he knows to do – then rewarding him with a treat when he does it.
If you are consistent in implementing these ideas, the problem should resolve.

good tips! what is a good age to begin formal training (not just for peeing) for Chesapeake bay retrievers? what's best, group or individual training? Ours is about 12 weeks old.

Basic puppy training like sit, stay can start as early as 7 or 8 weeks old. Potty training is usually futile until about 16 weeks of age. And most resources say any formal training should wait until about 6 months of age. I believe the decision to use group vs. individual training depends on a couple things. Your particular puppy and what is available in your area. If you get any recommendations from others, start with those. Otherwise, contact a few organizations for group and a few for individual training. Discuss with them what you hope to accomplish, and go with one whose practices match your expectations.
I don't have any personal experience with your breed, however this book "Hey Pup Fetch It Up" appears to be a good resource for Chesapeake Bay Retriever Owners - I see a few recommendations for it out there in www land.
Good luck with your new furry friend!
